Vintage Limestone Alla

A characterful antique limestone lamp niche sourced from Rajasthan, India, and believed to date from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Hand-carved from solid limestone, these decorative architectural pieces were traditionally built into the walls of Indian homes, havelis and temples. The recessed opening would have held a small clay oil lamp, known as a diya, providing light beside a doorway or within a sacred area.

The weathered surface, softened carvings and traces of age give each niche its own distinctive appearance. Now removed from its original setting, it makes a wonderful piece of Indian architectural salvage for display indoors or in a sheltered garden. The recess could also hold a small candle or decorative object.

As an original reclaimed piece, variations, chips, surface wear and irregularities should be expected. These characteristics form part of its history and authentic appearance.
